Ignored reasons for the crisis in Ukraine – Syrian Arab News Agency (sana.sy)

Damascus, 3 Mar (SANA) The drastic increase in anti-Russian propaganda spread by the Western press regarding events in Ukraine, in my view, requires a detailed explanation of what is really happening in this neighbouring country of Russia, disinformation that distorts the current situation and Moscow’s official position on the Ukrainian crisis.

It should be noted that the crisis in Ukraine has two aspects: internal and international.

The internal factor is that it is not a recent problem but a conflict that began in 2014 after a coup d’état carried out by nationalist forces and enemies of Russia. As a result, the neo-Nazi Kiev Junta, in addition to Crimea, was opposed by four million inhabitants of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, who for eight years have been suffering direct and deadly attacks at the hands of Ukrainian nationalists supported by the criminal regime in Kiev.

Throughout this long period the Ukrainian authorities not only opposed solving this problem through diplomatic channels (Ukraine never complied with the Minsk Agreements signed in 2015 in the presence of Russia, Germany and France, guarantors of the peace process), but also totally banned the use of the Russian language on Ukrainian territory.

Meanwhile, the international factor began to prevail. Kiev’s allies, mainly the US and European countries, ignored the war crimes of the Ukrainian authorities against their population, supporting them at the same time with weapons of war and training of their military and pushing them to join NATO, a military bloc that publicly declares Russia as its main enemy.

It is well known that, despite decades of Russia’s hard diplomatic work and our good faith, NATO’s expansion did not stop. Since 1990, when the Americans assured us that the Alliance would not move “an inch eastward,” NATO has incorporated 14 countries, deploying troops to their sovereign territories and getting closer and closer to Russia’s borders. Imagine, how much are we concerned about the intention to admit Ukraine as a NATO member? Not to mention ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent statements on his willingness to reconsider his country’s renunciation of nuclear weapons along with his threats to repress the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and retake crimea’s territory by military means.

In such a way, the situation in Russia’s neighboring country and historical Slavic brother again became a direct threat to our security, a considerable risk to be mitigated.

Exactly for this reason the special military operation, announced by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, aims to protect people who have been subjected to genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years and ensure the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as bringing to justice those who committed numerous bloody crimes against civilians, including citizens of the Russian Federation. There are no plans to occupy Ukraine!

Therefore, Russia is not waging war against the people of Ukraine, but is carrying out the operation to end the eight-year war. I want to stress that Russian troops, aviation and artillery do not attack civilian targets, they do not aim weapons at the population. The operation is carried out against the military infrastructure, in strict compliance with the mission of annihilating weapons on the territory of Ukraine, controlled by the criminal and Nazi junta.

I am sure that in its nature Nazism is the cancer in the body of humanity. And the cancer is not cured, but operated. During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) the Soviet people, including Russians and Ukrainians, paid too high a price to learn this sad lesson: nearly 27 million lives of soldiers and civilians.

I will emphasize again that this is not a war against Ukraine to occupy it, but a forced campaign to demilitarize its territory, to combat Nazism, which became the main ideology of the ruling junta in Kiev. The Russians and Ukrainians remain brotherly Slavic peoples who do not want war, and they must resolve the current crisis as soon as possible using all the means at their disposal. That is why, despite the military advance of the Russian troops, we have begun negotiations with representatives of Kiev to reduce human losses.

Dear readers! In these times of geopolitical crisis and unprecedented media war against Russia, I want to ask you for patience, prudence and impartiality, which have always been indispensable to understand the full complexity of the current situation and global processes.
